This year alone, millions of plastics straws have been used and are not discarded correctly. In Berkeley, they are looking to ban plastics due to the growing amount that is making its way to the ocean. The straw and the coffee stirrers are the 6th most common littler found among the beaches. On an average, plastic straws make up nearly 1 million pounds of litter. Berkeley is looking to have straws completely banned by 2018.
The smallest of things, like plastic straws, are affecting the coasts with litter. Not only does it affect the water, but marine wildlife as well. Eventually, that littler in the water will end up hurting or killing the animals in the water. As for people, it will make it unsafe to enjoy the beach, go surfing and swimming.
